Debate: One State Solution vs Two State Solution in Israel-Palestine
| May 11, 2009 | ||
| 5:00 pm | to | 7:00 pm |
Howard Building, Downing College, Cambridge
Monday 11th May, 5:00pm
(Organised by CU Palestine Society)
Speakers: Prof. Ilan Pappe (University of Exeter) and Prof. Yezid Sayigh (King’s College London).
Moderator: Prof. Yasir Suleiman (University of Cambridge).
The debate about the solution for the Palestine question has been going for a long time. But in light of the current deadlock in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, the debate on the appropriate solution for the Palestinian problem has become more and more relevant in Palestinian society. The split in the Palestinian political arena (between Fatah and Hamas) reflects this debate clearly. Our speakers will present their viewpoints on why they think one alternative is better than the other, they will have the chance to respond to each other, and of course at the end we will open the floor for questions
from the audience.
Location of Debate:

Entrance Fee: £2 - only to cover the venue costs.

Review: Iron Wall Screening 31st March
It was really encouraging that this event was so well attended by both existing members of PSC and newcomers. A big thank you to all those who came and donated so generously so that we hope to be able to follow up with further films.
The film by the Palestinian Director Mohammed Alatar exposes the effect of the settlements and the related infrastructure on the peace process. It shows the route of the separation barrier and its impact on Palestinian lives, from land confiscation, theft of natural resources to loss of basic human rights There are interviews with Israelis opposed to current policies including Jeff Halper from ICAHD (Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions). Former President Jimmy Carter described the film as the “best description of the barrier its routing and impact”.
Whereas this powerful film had made me angry enough to become active, one or two members of the audience felt that it portrayed such an appalling situation that it left them feeling depressed and hopeless. This is a comment that we have often heard but if we take this view, then we are allowing aggression to succeed. We have to take every opportunity to raise awareness of the facts by speaking to friends and colleagues so that eventually there will be huge numbers writing to their representatives and the media. This is the only hope for change.
This same point is made very clearly in another short (25min) DVD “Bethlehem Hidden from View” made in July 2008 by the Amos Trust, a Christian charity. Garth Hewitt, Director of the Trust, closes the film with an appeal for Christians to act. If you are a member of a church or group and would like to see this DVD with a view to showing it at your church we have copies that can be loaned. Please email us for more information:
The Iron Wall can be viewed on Google Video.
It is currently out of stock at national PSC but they are awaiting delivery in the next month. As soon as it is available it will appear in the shop on the PSC web site.
