Detention of Awad Abdel Fattah

September 26, 2016 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

We condemn in the strongest terms the recent detention of Awad Abdel Fattah and other high-ranking Arab politicians of the Balad Party by Israeli authorities. Awad has recently been a vocal supporter of the idea of One Democratic State (ODS) and spoke about his views in Cambridge last May.

We view these detentions as politically motivated and an attempt to silence Palestinians actively seeking to have a voice in Israel, including those campaigning for equality and human rights.

These actions represent a dangerous escalation and another stage in the political persecution of the Arab minority and political movements. They further undermine Israel’s claim to be a liberal democracy and mark a worrying move towards it becoming a “police state”.

We call on the Israeli authorities to release those detained for political reasons and stop the detention of individuals on political grounds. Under international human rights law, no one should be detained without a legitimate reason and, anyone accused of a crime has the right to a fair trial.

Talk: Jews for Justice for Palestinians

Friends Meeting House
Jesus Lane
Organised by Cambridge City Amnesty
Naomi Sklar will be speaking on behalf of Jews for Justice for
Palestinians, an energetic British organization with over 1600 signatories,
including a number of prominent public figures. We aim to bolster and broadcast
the alternative voice of British Jewry, secular and religious, who refuse to
give unconditional support to Israel and determinedly proclaim the message: ‘Not
in Our Name’. The organisation vociferously opposes Israeli policies that
undermine the livelihoods and human, civil, and political rights of the
Palestinian people.

Naomi will talk about the work of the organisation
and that of the Israeli Peace and Human Rights organisations that it supports,
as well as touching on her personal experience of being a Jewish activist
working for Palestinian human rights and volunteering on the West

Many people will know Jews who are liberal and humanitarian and yet
go silent where the actions of Israel are concerned and hold seemingly
inconsistent beliefs. Indeed, you may have talked to some while campaigning for
Amnesty. While being careful not to suggest a homogeneous ‘Jewish experience’,
Naomi aims to shed light on some of the identity issues and psychological
conflicts involved, with regards to community norms, security concerns, Zionism,
the idea of the homeland and aliyah, the Right of Return.
